"Not these guys again!"

Yeh-heh-hessss... The first preview for "The Mummy Returns" is online, and Ra help me, it looks damned entertaining.

Isn't the creature in the last shot of the trailer one of the "Fetish Shaman" thingys that were so freaking annoying to kill in "Diablo II?"

No Nookie!

Their screening of "Samurai X" went so well, ADV is doing more anime screenings here in Austin, this time at Bad Dog's theatre, and using two short "City Hunter" tales I wrote the English dialogue for. But for the record, I had nothing, nothing I say, to do with Ryo's (Joe's) constant use of the word "nookie" in place of the Japanese "mokori."

It's Genetic

This interview with the "Charlie's Angels" cast and its director "McG" explains a lot -- I never caught that Crispin Glover's father is an actor and played Mr. Wint in "Diamonds Are Forever." Also, apparently it's the Mr. Wint suit that Crispin wears in "Angels."

Bloody heck. Sorry folks. Now with correct interview link...

Good news, bad news, in Buffyland. The bad news is that the excellent Buffy Scripts site has pulled all of the scripts for "Buffy" episodes from the first season; the good news is that they were pulled because all of the scripts for the first season are going to be collected and published in time for the holidays.

Bias

Not that anyone cares too much, but this guy pretty well articulates why I voted for Nader. And I don't even like Nader that much -- in a lot of respects, he's crazy. But what does it say when the supposed liberal party is the one most likely to pass value judgements on what I read, watch, and listen to? Meanwhile, Prop-L -- the Silicon Valley "anti-growth" measure -- has passed in San Francisco by a slim margin. I've got mixed feelings about this, particularly because I look at SF and see Austin in the not terribly distant future...

Sometimes I Hate It When I'm Right

Uh, oops. So Chris mails me at midnight. I check mail at 8:30am, and also see that no one has reported this yet, so I post. And naturally Chris and I still wind up posting the same thing to the blog within seconds of each other. Ah, I'll leave this up anyway...

And about the election, so if you think about it, the cliché about "one vote can make a difference" may actually ring true in Florida. Say Bush does wind up winning after the recount -- if quite literally just a couple people in each town in the state had come out to vote a particular way, the election could have turned out with Gore as the President. It came down to 1,200 votes last night before the recount was triggered, folks. Amazing.

Chris just pointed out to me that my speculation as to why the Buffy DVDs are indefinitely pushed back was dead on. Motherpussbucket... And about as frustrating, my copy I'd ordered of the "X-Men" DVD that should be arriving any day now is already obsolete. Brian Singer confirms that an even-more-special edition is on the way which also deals with some of the "features" I'd been grousing about. I wonder how pissed Fox will be at him when they clue into the fact that Singer just caused a bunch a folks like me to try to cancel their orders for the first version. Gee, I wonder if maybe these shmoes should've just QUIT PUTTING OUT BACK-TO-BACK "More Special Than The Last One!" VERSIONS!

"...Why am I always surrounded by frik-kin' idiots?"

Crazy election, that's all I got to say...might as well enjoy it now, because it's going to be the most exciting part of the political scene for the next four years, no matter who wins. Maybe we can get a "do over" with new candidates?

Psychic

An overview of Dark Horse's plans to begin releasing the collected "Akira" this month -- for those who think the story began and ended with the animated movie, the landmark manga runs to 2,200 pages and truly earns its reputation as one of the most ambitious comics ever produced in Japan.

Bullet

According to Anime on DVD, looks like CPM will be releasing "Goshogun Etranger" on DVD sometime next year. For those who've never seen it (which would be almost everyone I imagine), "Etranger" was supposed to be the concluding chapter in a successful '70s animated giant robot TV show called "Goshogun." Instead, what everyone got was a surreal theatrical film in which giant robots are never even mentioned much less seen. Set years after the series, the story begins when Remy, the old team leader of Goshogun, falls into a coma and awakens in a nightmare city where everyone worships a strange panther god, mysterious assailants want her dead, and -- as an eerie young girl tells her -- no one gets out alive. Questions of reality, memory, and friendship hang thick over the proceedings. Highly recommended.

Oddities

Neat site that sells import videos -- mostly Italian horror, Hong Kong gangster, and Japanese monster movies, but also some interesting titles like the uncut "Hard Target," the crack-addled French action flick "Dobermann," and the uncut four-hour workprint of "Apocalyse Now." I haven't ordered from them yet, so I can't attest to their customer service, but they've got a fascinating inventory.

Header

Who needs movies? The
biggest jewel heist in the world was foiled today in London, when thieves carried out an elaborate plan involving a bulldozer crashing through the Millenium Dome, smoke grenades, and speedboats waiting on the Thames, all in an attempt to steal some of the most valuable diamonds in the world. In a further unlikely plot twist police had been tipped off and had switched the real diamonds with glass fakes, and substituted disguised cops for a large number of people in the crowd.

"The Jiggly Factor"
(Thanks to Wendi for the headline...)

Charlie's Auctions -- Should've guessed. An auction is already underway for gear from the new "Charlie's Angels" ranging from Lucy Liu's Chinese Fighting Muffins to Cameron Diaz's gold bikini to Drew Barrymore's zippo and camaro. Oh yeah, and Charlie's speakerphone box, of course.

Charlton's Angels -- Also for your perusal, a new video spoof on "Charlie's Angels" using a characterization of Charlton Heston that's upset because the Angels never use firearms.

Countingdown's Angels -- Countingdown.com held an Angels lookalike contest in honor of the premiere. Is there any reason why no one on the dn staff suggested this? What am I not paying you for, people? ...Of course, we'll have the "dork angels" up here soon enough (and no, that actually spawned more from "Dark Angel").

So who else caught the film over the weekend? I have to admit I had a surprisingly good time, but then I may have been influenced by certain... shallow factors. And I guess the martial arts interest that Crispin "What? Me Crazy?" Glover so spontaneously demonstrated on Letterman's show years ago finally paid off. But make no mistake, this is not art. It's a goofy amusement attraction; there's essentially no point in applying cinematic examination techniques to it. As Chris put it, the movie is virtually "critic-proof."
